European Firm Concentration and Aggregate Productivity

چکیده
Abstract This paper derives a European Herfindahl–Hirschman concentration index from 15 micro-aggregated country datasets. In the last decade, rose due to reallocation of economic activity toward large and concentrated industries. Over same period, productivity gains an increasing allocative efficiency market accounted for 50% growth while markups stayed constant. Using country-industry variation, we show that changes in are positively associated with efficiency. holds across most sectors countries supports notion rising Europe reflects more efficient environment rather than weak competition power.

Labor Market Friction, Firm Heterogeneity, and Aggregate Employment and Productivity
The paper is based on a synthesis of a "product variety" version of the firm life cycle model developed by Klette and Kortum (2004) and an equilibrium search model of the labor market with job to job flows introducted by Mortensen (2003). In the construction, a continuum of intermediate product and service varieties are produced with labor that serve as inputs in the production of a final good....
متن کاملFinancing Constraints, Firm Dynamics, Export Decisions, and Aggregate Productivity
We present a dynamic model in which firms accumulate wealth to avoid bankruptcy and to overcome financing constraints that affect their fixed operational costs and the costs of becoming an exporter. Financing constraints not only affect firms directly when they are binding, but also indirectly, through precautionary saving and the selection of firms via entry and exit of the domestic and export...
متن کاملThe link between firm-level innovation and aggregate productivity growth: a cross-country examination
This paper investigates whether failure in innovation at the firm level can account for cross-country heterogeneity in manufacturing productivity growth. There is no strong evidence in the literature on the existence of such link. Our work, however, differs in a number of ways from much of the previous cross-country comparisons on the relationship between innovation and productivity using firm-...
متن کاملFirm-Specific Productivity Risk over the Business Cycle: Facts and Aggregate Implications
Is time-varying firm-level uncertainty a major cause or amplifier of the business cycle? This paper investigates this question in the context of a heterogeneous-firm RBC model with persistent firm-level productivity shocks and lumpy capital adjustment, where cyclical changes in uncertainty correspond naturally to cyclical changes in the cross-sectional dispersion of firm-specific Solow residual...
متن کاملInformation, Misallocation and Aggregate Productivity
We explore the implications of imperfect information about firm-level fundamentals for the misallocation of factors of production across heterogeneous firms and the consequences for aggregate productivity and output. In our setup, firms learn from both private sources and stock market prices, the latter determined in a noisy rational expectations model of asset markets. We devise a novel calibr...
